I know that when you publish a comic book, you need to do things to maximize your income while minimizing your risk. You’re not selling the adventures of Whoeverman, you’re really selling the brand that is your comic book company. You want people to look at your imprint and buy whatever’s under the cover, no matter what it might be. It’s nice to develop key characters, but you need to sell a lot of books to support a company.
There was a surprising announcement Friday, as Midway, the company behind Mortal Kombat, and DC Comics announced a joint venture. Hearkening back to the tradition of the ‘versus’ games that I’d hoped were long since gone, the latest awful fighting game in the mix is the tantalizingly-titled Mortal Kombat VS. It just rolls off the tongue, doesn’t it? While they haven’t announced all the details yet, some of the specific DC characters mentioned are Batman, Wonder Woman, and of course, Aquaman. Who doesn’t love Aquaman, the world’s lamest superhero? They’re doing battle against the characters from Mortal Kombat, I suppose because they’re run out of excuses to have their own characters disemboweling one another and want to involve other people’s intellectual property. Of course, because DC is involved, the one hallmark of the Mortal Kombat series will not come into play in the new fighting game.
That’s right, no gore, no blood, and no fatalities to speak of (though Midway promises some vague finishing moves). The only thing Mortal Kombat was known for is thrown right out the window to keep people from ripping out Batman’s spine or beheading Wonder Woman.
You’d think that DC might learn a little something about the importance of having some edgy content, but I guess Vertigo wasn’t enough of an education for them. And really, a Vs. Haven’t we learned anything from Marvel vs. Capcom, Capcom vs. SNK, X-Men vs.
Street Fighter, and Bart vs. The Space Mutants?
Do people really want these games? Do people really buy these games? Are they even enjoyable? I can’t speak for the world, but if there’s going to be versus games being made again, then there are two games I want to see involving DC and Mortal Kombat. You know where I’m going with this, but I’ll go ahead and say it.
DC Universe vs. Marvel, and Mortal Kombat vs.

Street Fighter. Anything else is just completely disappointing from a fan’s perspective.
After all, we’ve wanted Marvel and DC to have it out for years now, and this way we can have our favorite badass Marvel characters take turns kicking the caviar out of Aquaman. It’s not that I dislike DC characters to such a great deal, but there’s a reason why we haven’t seen DC movies not involving Batman or Superman. DC characters haven’t adapted as well to modern times and there aren’t as many distinctive, adult characters in the DC Universe. DC characters do make great cartoon fodder, but there’s a difference between making a great cartoon and making a billion-dollar film franchise or a great video game. Maybe it’ll surprise me and be good, but given how poor the last Mortal Kombat game was, I kind of doubt it. Taking the edgiest fighting series out there and turning it into a kid-friendly game is probably not a great idea, and adding in a few DC characters won’t change things all that much, especially since you can’t tear their heads off and kick them across the room. That’s about the only thing that would make me buy a mash-up versus game.
Ron Hogan is thrilled that the new DC game will allow you to beat up Aquaman. Then again, anyone can beat up Aquaman, so it’s not much to brag about. Find more by Ron at his blog, and daily at.
Parents need to know that this game is rated 'Teen' instead of 'Mature' because Midway has decided to make the violence less graphic. It's still a fighting game and there can be blood splatter (which can be turned off) and each character can perform finishing moves called 'fatalities' (or 'brutalities' for some DC characters) that results in a dramatic conclusion to the fight, such as a backbreaking snap, stabbing, or slow-motion kick to the head. As with past games and comic book characters, the females are wearing revealing clothing and have exaggerated breast proportions. Consider it a battle between two billion-dollar franchises: Midway's warriors - such as Scorpion and Sub-Zero - face off against DC Comics' iconic superheroes including Superman and Green Lantern. Now available for the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3, MORTAL KOMBAT VS.
DC UNIVERSE is a fighting game that features signature attack styles and special moves, multiple solo and multiplayer game modes, and more than a dozen environments (including the Batcave). More importantly for comic book enthusiasts, perhaps, is an intertwining story line penned by the Mortal Kombat creative team in collaboration with celebrated comic book writers Jimmy Palmiotti ( Painkiller Jane, Marvel Nights) and Justin Gray ( Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, JLA Classified). We loved the concept, but how does it play? Well, for the most part. Controlling the 22 characters is fairly simple on the surface, allowing you to jump, kick, punch, and perform deadly finishing moves, but skilled players can take advantage of more advanced moves and combos for added depth. In other words, you can 'button mash' and win a few rounds, but in order to really get into the game, you'll need to learn moves such as Batman's 'Ducking Gut Punch' (down arrow on the d-pad and the X button on the Xbox 360 controller), the 'uppercut' (down arrow on the d-pad and Y button) and 'Vengeance' (X, X, Y). Players can also modify the game controls in the Options menu, if desired.
Multiple game modes will also keep players busy. Single player options include Story, Arcade, Practice, and Kombo Challenge, the latter of which allows you to tweak your skills with a favorite character by performing increasingly tough combo moves. Two-player modes are even more fun, whether you're against someone sitting next to you or over the Internet. Some new game-play additions are met with mixed success: 'Free Fall Kombat,' for example, has players matching an attacker's button moves displayed on screen to become the victor rather than the victim, but this minigame of sorts feels out of place from the main fighting mechanic. Overall, though, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe is a decent fighting game that, while not groundbreaking, successfully blends these two worlds and delivers an intense and attractive combat experience – especially for fans of Mortal Kombat.
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe does not follow chronologically with the other games in the Mortal Kombat series, and was considered an 'ultimate-Elseworlds' for DC Comics continuity by story co-writer Jimmy Palmiotti. After Shao Kahn's invasion of Earthrealm is defeated by Raiden's forces of light, Raiden destroys Kahn by blasting him through a portal. At the same time on Earth, Superman is seen stopping Darkseid's Apokoliptian invasion by blasting the Apokoliptian god with his heat vision as he enters a Boom tube. These acts do not destroy either of them, but merges them into Dark Kahn, and causes the DC and Mortal Kombat universes to merge. As the worlds merge, the characters' abilities fluctuate, causing violent 'rage' outbreaks that are actually the feelings of Dark Kahn being fused into the characters from afar. Because of this, certain characters either gain strength or vulnerability (allowing a character like Superman the possibility of being defeated due to his vulnerability to magic, and a character like the Joker the ability to fight Raiden).
With each world thinking that the other is responsible for the merger (or a potential invasion), they fight each other in Mortal Kombat until only two remain: Raiden and Superman. In the final battle, Raiden and Superman fight while Dark Kahn feeds on their rage. Both realizing that the other isn't working with Dark Kahn, they overcome their rage for each other and defeat their fused enemy, restoring the two worlds to their normal separation. While everyone else has been sent to their original universe, Darkseid and Shao Kahn have been switched and face eternal imprisonment in the other's universe. Darkseid being restrained in the Netherrealm, while Shao Kahn is trapped in the Phantom Zone.
